About the Differences in Pricing

The Length of the Rush
The quality of tatami mats is easy to distinguish by seeing and touching the actual products, but this can be more difficult when viewing them through photos.
To make a rough judgment on quality online, it helps to look at categorizations such as “first-cut grass” or “second-cut grass,” which refer to the length of the rush.
First-cut grass is of the highest quality, using only the best parts of long rush, which gives it ample length and beautiful, even coloring.
Number of Rush Leaves
There are between 4,000 and 7,000 rush leaves weaved into one tatami surface. High-grade products have more leaves, making them dense, thick, and durable.
Different Warps
Warps, used to weave the rush, are made of different materials such as linen and cotton. Linen is used for high-grade products due to its strength.
Cotton tends to be used for more casual products.
Difference between Resurfacing and Replacement

Resurfacing
The inner parts of the tatami are reused, and the old surfaces and edges are replaced. We recommend doing this every 5 to 7 years.

Replacement
The entire tatami, including the inner part, is replaced. This is usually done for new buildings, but we recommend replacing mats that are 40 to 50 years old.
