Our Mission as Tatami Stylists

History

HISHIGEN TATAMI was founded in 1919,
and has been making and selling tatami mats
for 100 years.

Today, many living spaces have become westernized with wooden floors,
but many people still like to consider having one Japanese-style room.
Tatami mats create spaces where the family can get together and relax.
You can sit Japanese-style or with your legs crossed, or even lay down with your arm as a pillow
On soft natural materials that are safe for children and elders alike.
As a place where all can get together in different positions, tatami spaces are an essential part of the Japanese lifestyle.
HISHIGEN TATAMI has passed on their technology from generation to generation, from the Taisho era to the current Reiwa era.
HISHIGEN’s top-quality tatami mats, woven from carefully selected rush, create spaces where warm bonds are formed.

Quality

We deliver top-quality tatami mats,
using carefully picked domestic rush and applying technology passed down for 100 years

While much of the rush distributed within Japan is imported from China, HISHIGEN TATAMI’s mat surfaces are made from domestic rush grown in Yatsushiro, Kumamoto prefecture.
Since its establishment, HISHIGEN TATAMI has continued to pursue the best materials for tatami surfaces.
We have found the perfect rush plant with all the desirable traits one could hope for: durability, moisture absorbency, beautiful texture and coloring. We go there every year to meet the farmers in person, to help with harvesting, and to check the plants with our own eyes and hands, in order to purchase the best tatami materials grown in each season.
We coordinate the best tatami mats for each customer.

We Pride Ourselves on being “Tatami Stylists”

The quality of tatami mats varies depending on the length and coloring of the rush plants, as well as the number of leaves used.
In addition, there have been many new types of mats introduced in recent years, such as those with no borders, half-sized mats, colored mats, and those with surfaces made from paper rather than rush. While having more options is a good thing, it can make for harder decisions when choosing tatami mats for your home.
The tatami stylists at “HISHIGEN TATAMI” are here to resolve those concerns.
Just as a regular stylist coordinates unique hair or fashion for an individual, we create ideal tatami mats for your home. We provide accurate advice on tatami types, surfaces, and borders, based on your ideas and intended usage of each room, while paying careful attention to your desires and budget.
“HISHIGEN” is your home’s “tatami stylist.”
